The Bukovinian Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Church, 1968

In his congratulatory message on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary and Consecration Ceremony of the new Holy Trinity Church, Rev. George Pokrowsky expresses warmest thanks and deepest appreciation to the two architects, George Kodak and Basil Miska. Completed in June 1968 the new church, at a cost of $141,000, was funded by the parishioners, several of whom took out personal loans for the new build; and one, Mr. Fochuk, President of the parish, mortgaged his own house. Such was the determination and commitment to build a new church.

The earlier church on Gladstone Street had been expropriated by the City of Ottawa and in 1965 George Kodak was approached to provide plans for a new church at a size of approximately 2,500 square feet, basement included.

The new purchased lot, on Somerset Street was located in the heart of Ottawa’s Chinatown and the challenge for G. Kodak was to provide a design that would be in harmony with the surroundings, yet would retain a distinct Christian and Greek Orthodox semblance.

A range of design possibilities was submitted to the Building Committee – from the ultra-modern to the more conventional. (See below). The final design was a re-working of the more traditional conceptual drawings – a rectangular structure with two cupolas, centre and forefront. Architect, Basil Miska prepared the architectural drawings, and donated the large stained glass Orthodox cross to adorn the central front windows.
