Holy Archangel Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Pro-Cathedral

7035 Columbia Avenue, Hammond, Indiana, USA

By April 1969, George Kodak had finished the preparation of complete architectural drawings and specifications for the new church which was to replace the wooden church that the parishioners had been using since 1938.

His design specifications for the church included five cupolas and a Baroque-styled main cross.  Detailed instructions as to the latter’s installation were included.  However, the parish leaders opted for a neo-Byzantine look.  The five cupolas were replaced by one large dome, and one simple Orthodox cross. Rev. Paul Darmoc, pastor of St. Michael’s Parish, at the time, directed and advanced the building of the new church.

The result is that the exterior of the church has little semblance to the architect’s original conceptual drawings (See below the Front and Side Views).

As it stands today, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Hammond Indiana, is an impressive edifice even though it does not reflect the usual Ukrainian Baroque-style elements which were the signature features of G. Kodak’s ecclesiastic works.
