Hellenic Communty of Ottawa
Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church
1315 Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
In 1973, George Kodak was asked by members of the Ottawa Greek Hellenic community to assist in the building of their church which was to be constructed on the pre-existing basement. An agreement between the Greek Community of Ottawa and District and George Kodak was drawn up specifying the scope of work and a time-line schedule for the delivery of the preliminary working drawings and specifications. The general concept was first to be approved by April 5th by Tass Varkalis. The Building Committee’s approval was scheduled for May 21, and the architectural working drawings were to be completed by June 11, 1973.
Tass A. Varkalis, Structural Consulting Engineer, gave first approval for G. Kodak’s general concept of the church design, which verified its compatibility with the existing basement structure. He eliminated however, the walk-about porch intended for the Orthodox Easter service ritual of walking around the church. The Building Committee then gave its “go-ahead” for construction having chosen the design, with a few modifications, that stands today at 1315 Prince of Wales Dr. Ottawa.
The Building Committee reduced the height of the church’s central dome, reinstated the domes onto the two front towers, and changed the angled towers at the front of the church to the rectangular form.
G. Kodak prepared the architectural working drawings from A to G; left them in the hands of the Consulting Engineer, C. Zourdoumis, and went on to his next project, the construction of St. Mary’s church in Burlington.
