St. George's Ukrainian Orthodox Church

19 Ontario St, Grimsby, Ontario, Canada

The iconostasis structure at St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in Grimsby was designed and carved by Yurii Kodak. He also painted all the icons. The Contract specified the following: The Royal Gates are to depict the four Evangelists, Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. The first tier of icons directly next to the Royal Gates is, as tradition dictates, to be of the Virgin Mary on one side and of Jesus Christ on the other. The deacons’ doors are to be of the Archangel Michael, and Archangel Hawryliw, followed again by full size icons of St. George and John the Baptist.

The second tier entails eight smaller icons of the Apostles, the Last Supper, the Passion of Christ on Golgotha, and the Resurrection. The dome ceiling behind and over the iconostas is to be painted blue with stars. The Royal Gates, where applicable to be covered with gold leaf. The frame to be carved of wood with plaster overlays.

The Contract signed February 1, 1953 stipulated that the iconostasis frame was to be completed by April 1, 1953, and all twenty-one icons painting by July 1, 1953.
